Compost top dressing spread over an aerated lawn

Top dressing is only as good as the compost you spread. Walk into any home-improvement store and you'll find bags of composted manure—Black Kow is the one most people recognize. It's inexpensive and it works fine for what it's designed for. But "works fine in a garden bed" and "the right material for a whole lawn" are two different things. Here's the honest difference.

What top dressing is supposed to do

A top dressing is a thin layer of compost spread across the lawn—ideally right after aeration so it falls into the holes and reaches the root zone. On sandy Central Florida soil, the job is to add organic matter that's otherwise missing, help the ground hold moisture, level minor low spots, and feed the soil biology that makes a lawn resilient. The material you use determines how well it does that.

Black Kow: fine for beds, not built for turf

Black Kow is composted cow manure with nutrients. For flower beds, shrubs, vegetable gardens, and small projects, it's a perfectly good soil amendment—and if you spread it on a thin or tired patch of lawn, you'll likely see some benefit.

The catch is what it's formulated for: plants and shrubs, not turf. It isn't built around what a lawn's root zone actually needs, and it isn't a dedicated lawn product. For a small DIY project that's no problem. For top dressing an entire lawn, it's not what we'd reach for.

COMAND: a compost made for lawns

For full-lawn top dressing we use COMAND (takecomand.com), a compost made specifically for turf. A few things set it apart:

  • It's alive. COMAND is a microbially-active compost—rich in beneficial bacteria and fungi—made through a controlled aerobic process, not just bagged organic matter.
  • It's clean. It's processed at high temperature to remove weed seeds and pathogens, so you're not spreading next season's weeds across your lawn.
  • It's built for soil performance. It improves soil structure and oxygen flow, eases compaction so roots can spread, helps sandy ground hold water, and restores the soil biology our Florida lawns are usually short on.

It costs more per bag than bagged manure. That's the trade-off—and the point. It's purpose-built for grass rather than borrowed from the garden aisle.

Why the difference matters in Central Florida

Our soil here is sandy. It drains fast, holds little organic matter, and compacts under foot traffic, mowing, and construction. A turf-focused compost is designed for exactly those conditions: it adds the organic matter the soil lacks and helps it hold onto the limited water a lawn gets—which matters even more under The Villages' watering restrictions.

Honest caveat: better compost gives your soil a better foundation, but it isn't a magic fix. How a lawn looks over time still depends on watering, irrigation, mowing, sunlight, and grass type. We guarantee the service is done right—not a specific result.

How we use it

We keep top dressing thin so it doesn't smother the grass, and we apply it after aeration whenever we can so the compost works down into the soil instead of sitting on top. Paired that way, a turf compost does far more than a surface dusting of bagged manure ever could.

If you're weighing a DIY bag from the store against a professional top dressing, the question isn't really "which is cheaper"—it's "which is built for a lawn." For a garden bed, grab the Black Kow. For your whole lawn, use a compost made for turf.
